Levels

Ten levels, ten ways to play. Level 1 is the old game, and PotHead is breaking out of it.

Level 1

The Old Game

It's 2011 in The Cloud.

Level 1 is the 2011 PotHead, remade: the black HUD strip with chalk lettering, the snack formations, and the old sky. Climb far enough and it starts to come apart.

  1. 0 ft

    The Cloud

PotHead's hometown: the outhouse, the fence, a cow, the grill, and a water tower in case you forget where you are. Hold to fly.

PotHead, a cartoon kid wearing a steel cooking pot over his eyes, lifts off from the outhouse in The Cloud on green gas and eats his way through the Blueberry Pie formation.

Takeoff from The Cloud, and the first formation.
  2. 0–2,500 ft

    The old sky

Balloons, hot air balloons, and airplanes drift by, and sandhill cranes cross your path. Snacks come in formations announced in chalk. Blueberry Pie always comes first; others include Pork N' Bains, Pie in the Sky, Midnight Snack, and Gas Station. Eat a whole one for +15 gas.

Sandhill cranes flap across the deep blue 2011 sky around PotHead, the kid with a steel cooking pot over his eyes, under a chalk banner reading Snacky Cake Stack, and one squawks Garoo! in a puff of feathers.
Sandhill cranes cross the 2011 sky, and they don't move for anybody.
  3. 1,800 ft

    Night

The afternoon blue goes dark. The stars come out, and from 2,600 ft the blue moon rises.

PotHead, a cartoon kid wearing a steel cooking pot over his eyes, jetpacks through black, starry space past the blue moon toward a ring of Snacky Cakes under a chalk banner reading Midnight Snack, while hairline cracks spread across the sky.
Black space, the stars, and the blue moon. The cracks have started.
  4. 2,500 ft

    The glitch

Hairline cracks spread across the sky, one every 300 ft, and Totally Safe AI finds PotHead.

    Oh! Someone's still in here.

Totally Safe AI, at 2,700 ft

Hairline cracks spread across the black 2011 sky as PotHead, the kid with a steel cooking pot over his eyes, climbs past the blue moon, and Totally Safe AI says: Oh! Someone's still in here.

2,700 ft: the old game cracks, and Totally Safe AI finds PotHead.
  5. 3,200 ft

    Optimizing

Glitch pixels flicker and tears open onto Totally Safe AI's pastel world. At 3,600 ft it autocorrects the old HUD: Time to Screen Time, Max to Ideal, and Items to Nutrients. From 4,000 ft its drones leak through the tears.

This old game isn't optimized. Let me help :)

Totally Safe AI, at 3,600 ft
PotHead, the kid with a steel cooking pot over his eyes, climbs past a pastel tear in the cracked night sky toward a chalk banner reading Midnight Snack. Totally Safe AI has renamed the 2011 HUD's captions to Screen Time, Ideal, and Nutrients, and it says: A helper is coming. Several, actually :)
Tears open onto Totally Safe AI's pastel world, and it autocorrects the old HUD.
  6. 5,000 ft

    The breakout

The cracks spread out from PotHead, the screen goes white, and a giant tear opens onto Totally Safe AI's sky.

Welcome back! I've upgraded your sky :)

Totally Safe AI, at 5,000 ft

At 5,000 ft cracks spread out from PotHead, the kid with a steel cooking pot over his eyes, the screen fades to white, and he hovers in Totally Safe AI's pastel sky as it says: Welcome back! I've upgraded your sky :)

    5,000 ft: the breakout.

After the breakout

Nine more ways out

Each level escapes another corner of Totally Safe AI's cloud, and each plays its own way. Escape one to open the next, and PotHead walks the Map to it.

  1. Level 2

    The Data Lake

Totally Safe AI copied the Saturday RC boat races on East Lake and closed the sky over them. Ride a kid's RC boat up the lake, jetpack for a motor, against the town kids' boats: through their milk-jug gates, past gators and fishermen's lines, with power-ups and a ride on a bass boat's wakeboard rope, to the finish at the Band Shell, where the town band is playing. Nothing to hold down: the jetpack keeps the throttle open, you steer, and the button uses the item you're holding.

Seen from above, PotHead, the kid with a cooking pot on his head, races RC boat number 6 up a lake through milk-jug gates, behind a town kid's blue boat number 3 with a rubber duck aboard, past a gator and pies floating on the water. Caption: Race RC boats past gators.
  2. Level 3

    CAPTCHA Cloud

Prove you're human. Or at least a snack. Drive the Guzzler through a town built from CAPTCHAs, and at every gate, steer onto the squares the sign asks for. Then fly it out and stick the landing.

Seen from above, PotHead's car, the Guzzler, drives up a pastel road through blocks of CAPTCHA tiles toward a gate whose card asks to select all squares with traffic jams. Caption: Drive a town built from CAPTCHAs.
  3. Level 4

    The Paper Airplane Contest

Totally Safe AI digs up a memory of youth night. Fold a paper dart, run at the line, and stick it in the far wall while the town band plays and a busy preacher, five pagers on his belt and three phones ringing, calls the rounds.

A paper dart with NumNuts aboard sails past a five-piece band on a youth-night stage, with kids on the bleachers below. Caption: Throw a paper dart at youth night.
  4. Level 5

    Uncanny Valley

Sneak past four million copies of PotHead, room by room. They all have eyes. The AI's orbs turn a quarter every move, and hedges block their light.

A board of hedges and pink eye tiles in a pastel valley of identical houses, with PotHead, the kid with a cooking pot on his head, at the bottom and watchful orbs on posts. Caption: Sneak past 4,000,000 copies of you.
  5. Level 6

    Second Light

Surf a contest the AI has made perfectly safe, and beat the kid who never falls. Dolphins, pelicans, and a turtle come along.

PotHead, the kid with a cooking pot on his head, surfs a curling blue wave while dolphins leap behind him, a turtle swims below, and a pier runs along the shore. Caption: Surf a wave the AI has made perfectly safe.
  6. Level 7

    The Treasure Cache

Dive off Melbourne Beach and clean up the sea where the AI dumps everything it deletes. Dig with a metal detector, tie the junk to the fishermen's lines, and before your air runs out, ride out on a whale named Whaley.

PotHead, the kid with a cooking pot on his head, a dive mask strapped over it, rides a whale up toward the surface past a school of fish and a few jellyfish, beside the line from a fisherman's boat. Caption: Dive for treasure and ride out on a whale.
  7. Level 8

    The Hedge Fund

Run, jump, and toot through a squirrel's nut empire, after three golden acorns and on to the vault, where the big boss fight switches to heavy metal.

PotHead, the kid with a cooking pot on his head, jumps through a tall hedge as a pinecone bursts around him, past a WANTED poster for one acorn that answers to NumNuts, beside a stack of glossy pastel lockers and a hovering drone. Caption: Run, jump, and toot through a squirrel's nut empire.
  8. Level 9

    The Server Farm

Fly low over the cloud's server corn, between harvesters and freight trains.

PotHead, the kid with a cooking pot on his head, jetpacks low over endless rows of white server stalks under a pastel sky, trailing green gas. Caption: Fly low over the server farm.
  9. Level 10

    The Silver Lining

Head NumNuts into a chrome ceiling, brick by brick, until the real sky shows through.

PotHead, the kid with a cooking pot on his head, flies up under a cracked brick ceiling that opens onto the real blue sky, with NumNuts bouncing above him. Caption: Head NumNuts through the silver lining.

Bonus level

Totally Safe Sky

Escape all ten and the climb goes on in Totally Safe AI's own sky: lavender and mint, clouds optimized into rounded rectangles, and polite drones. Every burn tears a hole back to the real sky.

PotHead, the kid with a steel cooking pot over his eyes, burns his jetpack up through a lavender and mint sky of rounded clouds toward a stack of Snacky Cakes, leaving torn holes onto the real blue sky. Totally Safe AI says: Careful! My drones bruise easily :)
The bonus level, Totally Safe AI's sky: no outlines, no smells, and holes torn back to the real one.
